3D model description

I hope you enjoy this articulated Axolotl! My goal was to create a cute critter with carefully designed articulations that will pose nicely, wiggle just right, and put smiles on peoples faces.  Print in different sizes, colors, or create unique paint jobs to make your own unique Axolotl family!

Please, share photos of your makes! I would love to see them!

Includes 2 STL files:
- Body (Print-In-Place, No Supports)
- Head (Easily Snap-Fit to Body, Requires Supports)

Here is a quick video showing the easiest method for snap-fitting the head onto the body:

3D printing settings

  • Body: Print-In-Place.  No Supports (Aside from a Brim)
  • Head: Snap-Fit to Body.  Requires Support "Touching Buildplate". (I like "Tree" supports)
  • Good bed adhesion is a must! I use a Brim to make sure the tail stays upright as the segments build.
  • 15-20% Infill.
  • 3 Walls.

For a demonstration of how I use Cura's support blockers to print the Head and Body at the same time, please check out this video. It's super easy!

Scale to your liking!  100% creates a 10" Axolotl, so that will make it easy to scale it to your desired size. (80% = 8",  75% = 7.5", etc.)  Depending on your printer tolerances, you should be able to print close to 60-65% before the joint function may start to become compromised. YMMV

Hi! I’m Matt Meyer. I’m a character animator with over 20 years experience working on films including Frozen, Zootopia, Moana, Hotel Transylvania, and more.
