F1 steering wheel for simracing, front plate and pads will be made out of carbon fibre, the back will be made out of forged carbon, the rest of the steering wheel will be made of 3D printed parts.
Update n°1: By the way the screenshots were taken after 10 hours on the project, I've currently worked 90 more hours on it and a lot of things have changed since.
Update n°2: Suede handles, clutch using a potentiometer, moulds have been made and implemented in the prototype.
Update n°3: I added some pictures of the forged carbon part that I made, they came out pretty nice, just when looking close some area of the parts are not that great but It is completely my fault, I did a very bad job during the process, on the other hand this mean that making a part out of forged carbon is very accessible.
Update n°4: The carbon fibre plate is on my 3 axis milling machine just waiting to be machined. After that I will need to do some simple electronic and make the whole thing work on SimHub.
Update n°5: The plate is almost done, still the assembly and the electronic to do. 130 hours on the project.
Update n°6: Electronics left to do but I don't have the motivation to do it right now.
Update n°7: Most of the electronic is done and the display works, noodle nightmare. 140h on the project.
Update n°8 : Electronic did not works so I made some changment in the project, 150h on the project.
Update n°9 : So I added an arcade board to the steering wheel, redid the electronics, and replaced some parts in the system.
Update n°10 : The arcade board didn't work, so I used a second Arduino pro micro. Now I just need to make the display works in-game. 160h on the project.
Update n°11 : The wheel is done, I even upgraded the handles for better comfort. However, I can't get the Nextion display to work since it's not supported by Simhub, so I'm kind of stuck right now. If you have any recommendations to make it work, please let me know!
Update n°12 15/sept/2025 : I bought a Vocor display :)
Update n°13 21/sept/2025 : I received the new display and modified some part to implement it. I added some pictures. Now I need to do the electronics and the documentation for the assembly.
Update n°14 12/Nov/2025 : Documentation is left on the to do list. Mostly done by the way.
Update n°15 19/Nov/2025 : It's done.
F1 Steering Wheel - Carbon Fiber / 3D Printed Edition
This project allows you to build an F1-style steering wheel for simracing.
The high-end version is made from carbon fiber and forged carbon for a realistic and durable finish, while the accessible version can be fully 3D printed with an FDM or resin printer for an easier and more affordable build.
Features:
12 buttons
2 shift paddles
1 clutch paddle
3 rotary encoders
4.3" display
A CNC machine is required for the carbon fiber version, but the entire project can also be completed using only an FDM printer.
A complete list of components and an assembly guide are included to help you build the steering wheel. Keep in mind that you need to be quite crafty.
** cost without filament:**
Carbon Edition : ~€385
3D Printed Edition : ~240€
