UPDATED DESIGN: I have added a variant which uses a printed bolt to hold the Nose to the Base. This is to prevent the torque snapping the central pillar as it accelerates in the rifling. Simply print all 3 parts with no supports and assemble the Comet by screwing the Nose to the Base with the Bolt. This design is still expendable by nature so don't be surprised if the Comet isn't reusable. I've also included an experimental whistle Nose for the Bolt variant. I'll leave the legacy files if you want to stick with that design. The Bolt variant appears to be aerodynamically identical to the original Comet.
FOR HARD TARGETS OR INDIRECT FIRE ONLY!
This is the Comet, a 40mm airsoft grenade using 8-shot cap gun rings to make a loud report upon impact with a hard surface. These things cost very little per shot (around 20p for the caps and pennies worth of filament) and serve as a cheaper alternative to other 40mm grenade projectiles, which makes missing a lot less annoying. Pump them out and fire away!
The Comet works a lot better in urban airsoft sites as it relies on it's kinetic energy to fire it (unlike the Meteorite) but it still can go off against trees, tree roots, hard mud and of course bunkers and vehicles.
The Comet is expendable (rarely survives impact) and thus designed to be printed as fast as possible and require no non-printable parts aside from the caps. No metal firing pins or springs required! Just print, click together and fire! Don't worry if the finish isn't the best, the Comet is designed to be pumped out quickly.
The range of the Comet is approx. 60m+ when fired at an angle, although spin drift and the Magnus effect in strong wind have to be factored in, just like real spin stabilised projectiles!
Any updates will be added in time. If you have any issues please let me know!
To launch the Comet you will need a rifled barrel which can be printed, you can find many different types here on Cults3D. It's also Taggin compatible!
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS:
Print parts, remove supports from the uprights on the Base.
Carefully press an 8-shot cap gun ring (I recommend Sohni-Wicke caps) onto the firing pins on the Base, the firing pins may have a rough finish but this is not an issue as the Comet is not reusable. If the ring is the wrong size, try cutting one of the little links in the ring to allow for it to expand or contract.
With the caps pressed on you can now gently press the Nose onto the uprights of the Base, the Nose has a rectangular opening so make sure you align it right. The Nose should slide down onto the top of the caps and then with gentle but firm pressure (don't strike it!) press the Nose until the catches expand outwards and lock the Nose onto the Base. You may need to press quite firmly and use a small instrument to splay the latch apart to lock it in place. If your printer suffers from elephant-footing you may need to use a scalpel to open up the Nose's hole a little.
The Comet is now live. A strong enough impact on the Nose will fire the caps. The whole ring of caps gives increased redundancy and also a louder report.
Load the Comet into the rifled barrel of your choice. I recommend only doing so right before you fire for safety reasons. Do not use at close range against people!
The final weight of the Comet is around 30 grams, but please be careful when firing!
Use responsibly, check with your site first. Use only at a proper airsoft site or private land with permission. I'm not responsible for any misuse. Do not use within 50 metres, for indirect fire or vehicle kills only, DO NOT USE WITHIN CLOSE RANGE! Loading the projectile into the launcher immediately before firing is recommended.
I DO NOT authorise reselling of this design, physical or electronic. PRIVATE USE ONLY!
