3D model description

******************* Patent-Pending *******************

Changelog:

  • 03/26/2022: Made top pegs and gear frame pegs stronger.

  • 08/08/2021: Adding Triangle V3 STL which has a tighter tolerance peg. Also added rounded edges so that it doesn't get caught on the Ring.

  • 08/07/2021: Added V2 Gear Frame and Spur Gear STLs to make the pegs more secure

  • 07/10/2021: New Triangle STL has been uploaded

This is a geared box with a unique opening mechanism.

When you twist the base of the box, the triangular top pieces swing open, and then close again on the other side.

IMPORTANT: In your slicer, scale down all of the files to 90%. I overestimated when I first created the design.

I included a picture of a smaller scale version with all the parts laid out.

Parts:
Ring x1
Body x1
Gear Frame x1
Triangle x6
Small Gear x6

Ring should be plated with the slotted side up.

Assembly Instructions:

1) There is a groove on the inside of the Gear Frame, and an ring near the top of the Body. Press the Gear Frame and the Body together until the ring fits into the groove. After the pieces have snapped together, you should be able to rotate the Gear Ring freely.
2) Place a small gear on each of the spindles on the Gear Frame. When you are placing them, make sure that the hole is dead-center facing towards the inside of the box. MAKE SURE they're all oriented correctly! If a single gear is even one tooth off, it will be really difficult to disassemble and fix.
3) Once all the gears are in place, place the ring on top and lock the gears in with a twist.
4) One by one, press fit each triangle into the gear. If it's too loose, you may need some superglue to hold it in place, but in my experience it's usually too tight of a fit. Press down on the triangles until the stem is very short or is no longer visible.

It's pretty straightforward to assemble. The tricky bits are orienting the gears correctly, and then pressing the triangles into the gear. Definitely reach out if there are any issues.
