Wind Spinner Double Helix

The new double helix is a wind spinner with a graceful and interesting movement due to the arrangement of its endless ribbon. Two spirals are connected in such a way that they form an endless ribbon. Suspended from a thread, it soon begins to turn when the wind blows. The eye follows the spiral as it rises on one side and falls on the other. This creates a delightful optical illusion, as if the ribbon were alive and moving like a snake. You can see some of these figures in action in the Utube video: https://youtu.be/mCId7m3xNt8

You can also scale the parts. When using the pre-supported version for printing, you have to be careful that the supports are not too weak when scaling down. The pre-supported file is very large and takes a long time to print. It is easier to use the pure version with the "tree" support settings and an overhang angle of 55 degrees.

You can paint or varnish this small kinetic sculpture as you wish and get a very nice and cheerful decoration for your house or garden. It looks good in front of the window and also works indoors if there is enough rising air, for example above the heating. It is best to hang the wind chime on a nylon thread, for example on a fishing line. This is very stable.

I have designed the piece both plain and with a prefabricated support. These work very well for me for both FDM and resin printing.

When using the pure STL, it is best to use the tree with an overhang angle of 55 degrees for the support settings.

PLA or standard resins are suitable for printing. The spinner is about 20 cm high.

Printer details:

For FDM:

Layer thickness: 0.1 mm, (little rework, good surface and less sanding required.)

Print temperature 200 °

Print bed temperature of 60 °

Printing speed: 70 mm

Outer wall speed: 20 mm

Flow: 100%

Wall thickness 3 mm

Printing plate adhesion Brim / 15 mm wide

Filling 20% / triangles

Please ensure good bed adhesion. Simply remove the support rods from the finished model and sand off the residue.

The settings for resin printing depend on the properties of your printer. Standard resins are suitable.

I have 2 printers in operation:

For FDM: Ultimaker 3 Extended (PLA works very well here),

and for resin: Phrozen Transform Fast.

Both are excellent devices.
