This helicopter was first used for military purposes in 1959 and went into production in 1962 under the designation UH-1 (Utility Helicopter-1) and the nickname Iroquois (after the Iroquois people), but is widely known as Huey, and the twin-engine model, Bell UH-1N Iroquois, as Twin Huey.
