Hi! I recently printed your model and I love the design. However, I have some concerns regarding health safety for long-term use.
Since the internal spiral is impossible to reach for mechanical cleaning and FDM prints have porous layer lines, how do you handle the risk of mold and bacterial growth inside?
Do you recommend a specific food-safe sealant (like epoxy) for the interior (and how to apply it to make sure it's effective), or have you found another way to keep the instrument sanitary?
Hi there,
I play this instrument almost daily and yeah it does get icky inside sometimes (specially when it gets full of saliva after a good session 🤮).
I wash it with tap water after each intense playing session. I don't do it every time, just when I feel that it's necessary.
Sometimes I dunk it in a swimming pool and let it fill completely with water. The mild bleach in the water takes care of most of the ick inside. After that I twist it around and shake it to get the water out as best I can.
If the accumulation of bodily fluids inside dries up and becomes smelly (yeah this also happened) then I bring out the big guns:
Warm water with baking soda.
I prepare about 2 liters of concentrated baking soda solution. It should be hot to the touch but not enough to give you burns. I pour it into the mouthpiece when the instrument is standing upright until it comes out the other end. I let it sit for about an hour and then I wash it with tap water. That gets rid of even the worst grime and eliminates any smell.
About using sealant, I've never tried it but it can definitely be a good idea.
Liquid 2 part epoxy can be used. I believe that it'll improve the sound as well as make it more easier to clean. I believe it'll take at least 500ml of epoxy to give it a good coating. You'll have to plug it from both sides with the epoxy inside. If you have access to a rotation molding machine, it should do a good job of giving it a uniform coat of epoxy from the inside.
If you can't find such a machine, you'll just have to twist and turn it continuously until the epoxy is set.
