Automaton (mechanical)

Automaton (from the Latin automăta and this from the Greek αὐτόματος autómatos, 'spontaneous' or 'with its own movement'. According to the RAE, 'machine that imitates the figure and movements of an animate being') is a technological equivalent of what today would be autonomous robots. If the robot is anthropomorphic, it is known as an android.
