Make’s description

This is my first major build with my Prusa XL, and the project is still in progress, so updates will follow.

All the files were processed in Prusa Slicer with the aim of using the Prusa XL's Multi-Material capabilities to print off parts that do not need any sanding or painting at all. My current living situation means I don't have enough room in my apartment for a painting setup, so being able to print each part in full color is a huge boon to me. I printed most of the parts at a layer height of .15. The barrel components were printed at a finer layer height of .10 since layer lines on silk PLAs tend to be a lot more visible than regular PLA. This resulted in the metallic parts having a beautiful faux brushed look to them in person.

The files in this project are very well organized and pre-oriented for optimal printing performance. All the parts printed out nicely, and fit together wonderfully, ready for gluing. Now, with large prop builds like this, I would prefer to have a mechanical means of fastening the core parts together, like a threaded rod down the spine of the cannon, but I ordered some PLAgloop adhesive to bond the pieces together, so hopefully that will prove strong enough. Until then, I have a comically long C clamp holding everything together

I did notice an issue with the AC8-Autocannon's Ergonomic design. When I printed off the rear parts of the cannon with the shoulder cutout, I noticed that my shoulder barely fits into the cutout, and there are two points on the front and back of the shoulder pad that press into my chest and back in a slightly uncomfortable manner. Now this isn't that big of a problem if I wanted to wield the autocannon while wearing something like a T-Shirt, but it becomes a huge problem if you are wearing armor pads. So, while writing this, I am printing off a modified version of the MainBody5 piece, scaled up by about 122% along the length of the cannon to give the shoulder cutout an extra 2 centimeters of clearance. Ideally, the better solution would be to modify the design and only stretch the shoulder pad to accommodate for larger shoulders or bulky armor, but I don't have the 3d modelling experience necessary to do that. I will update the post as soon as that part is done printing with my thoughts on the ergonomics of the modified parts.

All that aside, this is a really high quality set of models, and if your weapon of choice in helldivers is the Autocannon, and you want to rock it at conventions or just hang it on your wall, I can highly recommend this model. I cannot wait to get started on making the ammo backpack that goes with this.

FOR SUPER EARTH!

Edit: Added some more pics of the cannon glued together. The extended shoulder pad fits way better.
