Makeβs description
This was definitely a challenge, and if I had it to do again, I might make different choices, but here we are, and it worked out!
This is printed in wood, so it is extra rough. On top of that, my printer ended up with, but managed to recover from, a partial clog about 1/3rd of the way into the top piece and there were some quality issues there around the snake columns. I can sand and paint those out though, beauty of wood, but I feel like if I hadn't used wood (which I did to make it easier to paint later without a base coat), I might have got more stable results in the end.
The pyramid shapes on the base that are designed to nest into the top piece, they... did not work. Now my printer has fantastic tolerances thankfully, but even after I shaved and cut various corners, edges, the top, etc. off those pyramids, they would not fot into the top part fully, and it caused both pieces to rock against one another (having to choose whether the front or back is fully seated against the bottom of the model, but not both).
When I checked the top piece on the table, it was flat enough (some curling which I already knew about, but not enough to become a rocking amusement ride). So heck, I lopped off those pyramid bits and just glued it together. Worked great, but if I did it again I would redesign the interlocking parts myself as it's of course easier to line everything up with those in place.
Another problem printing it in wood is that the wood filament was incredibly leaky, and I do not normally have a leaky extruder so this was a filament thing, and as a result between some of the detailed flat glyphs on the model it did leave a number of hard strings which I would have to remove bit by bit -- I'll probably never get them all off, and most likely I'll just paint it and try to bring out the detail with a highlight color, skipping any bits that are not supposed to be there.
Other model issues: The snakes on the front columns both had some weird texture in them, rather than being solid, and it does not print well at all. There are a number of areas on the model's glyphs I would improve, but for sure I would make the snakes solid before I did a re-print of this. I had to go back in later and fix them with a 3D pen because they were terrible, but perhaps it was the gosh darn leaky wood at it again though.
But for all my complaints about the material I chose, I far prefer the color and texture finish if I wanted to leave it like this. I may paint some parts of it but leave others as this finish as it already looks quite a bit like stone anyway.
It's a really great model, but it is a long print, so choose your material carefully :)
I may print it again in PLA, because I'm crazy like that ;)
One last thing: out of 4 initial dice-rolls I did, 1 went flying out of the tower and across the floor, so don't always count on that little cavity to hold back the mighty power of the D20.
