Astral Planetary Defense (commonly abbreviated as APD) is the primary military defense force of an empire world. The APD is under the control of the local planetary government rather than direct Imperial control; the raising, training, arming, leadership, etc., of such units are entirely in the hands of the planetary ruler of the world. According to Imperial law, all Imperial planets must maintain a permanent defense network in order to maintain control of the planetary government (and therefore of the Star Empire) over the world against any possible invasion or insurrection.
