1/72 HMAS Melbourne Aircraft Crash Recovery Crane "The Beast" – Flight Deck Recovery Vehicle

Recreate one of the most distinctive vehicles to serve aboard Australia's aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne with this detailed 1/72 scale model of the famous aircraft crash recovery crane, affectionately known by her crew as "The Beast."

Designed specifically for my own 1/72 scale HMAS Melbourne project, this model has been recreated using the best available reference photographs, sketches, and historical material. To the best of my knowledge, it accurately represents this unique Royal Australian Navy recovery vehicle.

Historical Background

Known affectionately as "The Beast," this remarkable recovery crane served aboard the Royal Australian Navy aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne, where it was used to recover disabled or damaged aircraft from the flight deck following accidents, emergencies, or maintenance operations.

The vehicle was built by Hastings Deering, using a heavily modified Ford 5000 tractor chassis as its foundation. The result was a compact yet immensely capable recovery vehicle uniquely suited to the confined environment of an aircraft carrier.

Throughout its service life aboard HMAS Melbourne, "The Beast" supported flight operations involving a variety of Royal Australian Navy aircraft, including:

Douglas A-4G Skyhawk
Grumman S-2 Tracker
Fairey Gannet
de Havilland Sea Venom
Westland Wessex

As one of the most recognisable pieces of support equipment carried aboard the ship, it played an essential role in keeping flight operations running safely and efficiently.

Design Notes

This model was originally created for my own 1/72 scale HMAS Melbourne aircraft carrier project and has been carefully designed using the best historical references available.

The interior is supplied as separate parts to simplify painting and assembly, while the separate crane allows builders to display the vehicle in a range of working positions.

Files are supplied unsupported and have been designed for resin printing.
