The Second Station of the Cross: Jesus Takes Up His Cross

Fresh from condemnation, the scourged and thorn crowned Savior willingly receives the heavy beam of the cross upon His wounded shoulders. In silent obedience and boundless love, He embraces the instrument of His torment, bearing not merely wood, but the weight of every human sin beginning the sorrowful ascent to Calvary with resolute grace.

John 19:17 (ESV):
"and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha."

(Parallel accounts appear in Matthew 27:31, Mark 15:20, and Luke 23:26, though John's emphasizes Jesus carrying it Himself.)

This poignant moment invites reflection: in accepting His cross, Christ invites us to take up our own daily crosses with trust, knowing that through such surrender, redemption flows and suffering finds purpose in divine love.

My mother was raised Catholic, found salvation in a Pentecostal church, and raised me in a Southern Baptist congregation. She was the salt of the earth a nurse for almost 40 years, a professional clown, a devoted mother, and a saint. Widowed twice, she raised four children with unwavering strength drawn from her refuge in the Lord, a light that still shines.

We often spoke by phone, singing silly songs and sharing deep questions we longed to answer. We prayed together....
When I asked about her favorite part of growing up Catholic, she immediately described the Stations of the Cross. I was vaguely was aware of it... Now I am very much so.

This Lenten season, I humbly invite you to join me in a project I have labored over for some time. In honor of my mother—and, more profoundly, in honor of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
I have created 3D models of each of the fourteen Stations of the Cross.

What began as an effort to remember her became a journey to glorify the King of Kings. This endeavor has been one of the most profound meditations and waking prayers of my life, revealing why she cherished the Stations so deeply. Words can't describe the impact this has had on me in so many ways.... My Mom.... Sue Hopper who shed her mortal coil to go be with The Lord still is sharing the blessings of Christ.

The Stations of the Cross form a sacred tapestry of devotion, guiding the faithful through Christ’s Passion—from His condemnation by Pilate to His entombment. Each station is a meditative portal to empathy, sacrifice, redemption, and divine love that transforms suffering into eternal glory.
Rooted in early Christian pilgrimages along Jerusalem’s Via Dolorosa, the practice flourished under Franciscan care and was standardized to fourteen stations by the 18th century, enduring as a Lenten beacon worldwide.
Beginning March 21 and continuing through April 2, I will release one 3D model daily. Each will include photos, a brief reflection on that station, and options to 3D print or order.
My mother’s passing, though anticipated, strengthened my faith and sobriety rather than weakening them. An undeniable encounter with the Lord on the day she passed confirmed His presence that has forever changed me
. Having wandered and returned like the prodigal son, I now dedicate my remaining days and all my gifts in woodworking, 3D design, programming, and beyond, to serving and glorifying Abba.
Nothing else compares; all is hollow without the body and blood of Christ.
Creating these models has demanded deep concentration, sorrow, and joy especially when contemplating Mary, the Mother of God. Raised in a Protestant tradition that often overlooked her, I once found such reflection foreign, even suspect. Yet pondering the righteous woman chosen to bear the Messiah, to nurture Him, witness His crucifixion, and behold His resurrection, has been transformative without ever diminishing my worship of the one true God. The love of a mother is profound, never should it be neglected.
Each station has evoked hours of prayer and meditation. What began as an idea for Christian book-nook scenes has become this far greater endeavor.
