3D Printing Designers Interview: XYZ Workshop

1. Kae Woei, Elena, can you say a few words about yourself, your project and your work?

XYZ Workshop was formed in early 2013. We were intrigued by desktop manufacturing and spent their time out of our architectural work tinkering around with their kit assembled 3D printer from Ultimaker. Much like Architecture, we were drawn into the potential of 3d Printing as it fused aspects of Art, Sculpture and Technology.
We started of just making and creating objects. Which lead us to entering a lot of 3dprinting design competitions. we took our experiments further and started creating fashion pieces. We were then contacted by ultimaker to help them create a fully 3dprinted dress for them for 3d printshow in New York 2014. This dress was well received as it was one of the first full-printed dress that flowed a little like fabric on the runway.
Our dress was later picked up for a documentary episode by discovery channel. And was also invited to display our dress at a fashion event organised by Michelle Obama in the whitehouse.

2. Where do you get your inspiration to create these fabulous designs?

Besides our dresses we also create printed toys and sculptures. These we get inspired by playing with our 3 year old son and even while watching cartoons with him.

3. Which CAD software(s) do you use to make your designs?

Primarily rhino 3d, but we also use 3d max, sketchup. We love using thinkercad as well.

4. What 3D printer have you got and what are your regular printing settings?

We have got a couple of ultimakers and have been a fan of ultimaker ever since we started with our ultimaker kit. The great thing about ultimaker is that you can have full control about almost every aspect of the printer.
Our love for ultimaker has also lead us to a career with Ultimaker. Kae Woei has now joined up with becoming their creative director. Imaginables are the official distributor of Ultimaker in Australia and aims to promote the Ultimaker experience to the Australian consumer.

5. Finally, among all your great work, what is your favorite creation?

Though we are probrably mostly know for our 3d printed dress. I think my favourite design is our UltiBotBot. It was design out of pure fun and experimentation. A little 3dprinted robot toy tank that is not only articulated but is also able to shoot chocolate goodies from its cannon.
