I really enjoyed making this. I highly recommend printing this design if you are looking for a fun project.

I printed this at 70% size because my 3D printer is quite small, having only a 120 x 120 x 120 mm print volume. The reduced diameter of all the gears modified all the torques in the system, which made it more difficult to drive. I was able to compensate by extending the drive gear so that it was held by both supports (see photos). I also had to replace two thin gears with wider ones near the top of the bird in order to prevent them from getting sheared out. With these slight changes, it runs smoothly at this smaller size (but is somewhat less elegant).

This was sliced using Simplify3D.

Maximum printing speed is 40 mm/s (@ 40% for outlines, 60% for solid infill, & 80% for supports). Max (non-extruding) movement speed is 60 mm/s.

Hummingbird:
Hatchbox White PLA
Extruder: 0.4 mm nozzle / 195 C
100% infill
Supports: 40% infill, 4mm pillar resolution
(wings were printed horizontally with 1mm support pillars)

Gears:
Hatchbox Black PLA
Extruder: 0.4 mm nozzle / 180 C
100% infill (main drive gear has variable infill)
Supports: 40% infill, 1.5 mm pillar resolution with 3 100% dense top layers (i.e. small rafts on top of supports)

Box:
SUNLU Woodfill PLA
Extruder: 0.6 mm nozzle / 195 C
Infill: Variable (20% general, 100% mechanical connectors)
Coasting: 0.2 mm
Outline Detour Factor: 3
Supports: 2 mm pillar resolution

Crank:

Part modifications for the second support and drive gear were done in OpenSCAD. I tried very hard to minimize friction with LOTS of very fine filing & sanding before modifying these two parts. Perhaps I could have done better, but the modifications worked in the end for me.
