3D model description
Spinosaurus aegyptiacus tail section.
Age: Cenomanian, Late Cretaceous
Location: Kem Kem beds, Morocco
This is part of the middle front of the tail. Life size scale.
- Includes 2 versions. One with all ten pieces separately, and one with the areas in between filled in to create a solid piece for support.
I've partially based this on scans and partially a reconstruction. I've scanned an isolated Spinosaur caudal vertebra and chevron that I scaled to that vertebra. The original vertebra is mostly complete but the extremities are broken off. So I've digitally sculpted those to restore the whole vertebra. I then modified that to make 4 extra vertebrae. The original is in the middle of this section.
I've based the reconstruction mostly on the Spinosaurus aegyptiacus neotype as well as the caudal vertebrae of Ichthyovenator laosensis.
I've scaled all of it on the original vertebra, so it's life size. It doesn't seem to be an absolutely huge Spinosaur so it's probably a young adult.
A new fossil of Spinosaurus was recently found with a nearly complete tail. It turns out the spines on top were much taller than previously thought. It actually had a tail fin.
So I may have to revise the reconstructed spines on this model.
