우리나라에서는 옛날부터 지역간의 거리를 재어 그것을 이수(里數)로 나타내왔다. 거리를 재는 법은 시대에 따라 다소 차이가 있겠으나, 가장 정확한 근세의 측정법으로는 긴 줄자를 쓰는 방법이 있다. 이러한 측정법은 인력이 많이 들기 때문에 원시적 방법이라 하겠다.
1441년(세종 23) 3월 17일에 왕과 왕비가 온수현(溫水縣)의 온천에 가던 도중, 가마골[加麽谷]에서 사냥 구경을 하기 위하여 처음으로 말이 끄는 초거(軺車)를 탔는데, 그 수레가 바로 거리를 잴 수 있게 만든 거리계차, 즉 기리고차였다 한다.
그 수레는 1리(里)를 갈 때마다 나무로 만든 인형이 북을 쳐서 거리를 알리게 만든 자동거리 측정용 수레였다. 이 수레의 측정원리는 오늘날의 자동거리계와 같았을 것으로 추측된다.
이런 기리고차가 중국에서는 진(晉)나라 때부터 사용되었다 했는데, 그것은 1리마다 인형이 북을 치고, 10리를 갈 때마다 종을 울리게 만들었다 한다. 그 구조는 밝혀지지 않았으나, 『송사(宋史)』에 그 제작기구가 상세하게 기록되어 있다. 그것은 둘레가 18척(尺)인 바퀴가 돌 때마다 그 회전이 톱니바퀴[齒車]를 통하여 회전수를 알 수 있게 만들어 1백 번 회전할 때마다 1리를 알리는 북을 치게 만들었다고 했다.
세종 때도 장영실(蔣英實)이 왕명을 받아 중국에 유학하여 기술을 배워 가지고 와 1434년에 자격루(自擊漏)를 완성하였고, 1438년에는 옥루(玉漏)도 완성하였다. 이러한 기계적인 기구가 만들어졌다면 기리고차의 기구쯤은 손쉽게 만들 수 있었을 것이므로 이것도 역시 장영실의 작품으로 추측된다.
추측하건대 세종 때의 기리고차도 그 바퀴의 둘레가 세종주척(世宗周尺) 18척이 되는 직경 119.15㎝의 양바퀴 초거로서 바퀴가 1백 번 회전할 때마다 나무인형이 북을 쳐 소리로 1리를 알리도록 만들었다. 물론 바퀴의 회전수는 톱니바퀴로 자동적으로 계산이 되게 설계되었다.
