3D model description
Paper filters are expensive and after a few cleanings they don't seem to last more than a day. Recently I saw an add for cheap Chinese foam filters that are supposed to be reusable but the reviews say they collapse as they load up with contaminants. Since I happen to have some open-cell foam sheet I decided to give making my own a go but support them with a core similar to how the paper filters are constructed.
My 'Summer Waves' brand pool calls for A/C type filters which have a rubber gasket molded into the ends. Turns out the pump inlet (which is way down in the bottom of the filter housing and hard to measure) is larger than the strainer cap which plugs the top of the cartridge. For that reason I have created 3 versions of the core.
- One is printed whole, with a continuous 1.75" ID. This is usable in my pool by cutting the foam too wide and allowing it to fit over the pump inlet while the core tube slips over the strainer cap. Fair warning, it floats when the pump is off so I've temporarily placed a brick on my strainer to hold it down at night.
- One prints half-height, has a grid which is to be used for chlorine tablets and to glue to the other half, and has an ID of 1.75". *The final version has the same grid and half-height but has an ID of 2" to fit over the pump inlet.
Mixing and matching of the two half-height parts is intended to allow use with whatever configuration you might have, even if it's a bastard hybrid setup like mine.
