3D model description

LED Light-Up 2 Tier Outdoor Christmas Star

Boost your outdoor display with this projecting 2 tier led Christmas decoration!

I was going to buy this type of decoration from a well-know UK garden centre but they were a pricey £20. I have produced this one to pretty much the same size and spec for a fraction of the cost!

Outside star size = 450mm x 450mm
Inside star size = 290mm x 290mm
Projection = 11mm

3D printing settings

Use a suitable brim setting to stop the edges curling up - as they definately will!

I used 100% infill for durability.

Use a cheap set of 50 LED's - I got the ones pictured from Wilko for £5. They are outdoor battery operated with various mode settings. The wire length is 4.7m.

There are sockets within the two stars to enable the connection rods (which you will need to print five of) to fit into. You may need to scale the rods down slightly to fit depending on you printer specification (or you can just make the hole a little bigger / cleaner with a drill as I did). I made the connecting rods black to make it more like the inner star is floating.

The models are suitably flattened at the bottom to erradicate overhangs.

These ones were printed on a 500mm square bed size so due to the size of the big star you will need to slice accordingly for your bed area.

I bonded the stems to the stars using a 3D pen but super glue would do just as well.

For the inner star there is one led at each peak and trough as well as one mid-way. For the outer star there is one led at each peak and trough as well as two split evenly (just follow the picture of it lit up on my desk). This uses up all 50 LED's exactly. I attached them just using clear tape (but modelling some nice clips would be handy).

The outer star is thicker than the inner one for stability.

Just hang with a nail!

As the holes of the smaller star are on the surface of the bed, you will probably need to remove the first layer(s) worth of material from it (i.e. the squash layers). Just use a small drill if necessary.
