And then someone says to me... "You know you can use FOR loops and that in openSCAD right?"
I did not.

So – to play with the loops - I have made a nice simple pen holder that allows you to choose the number and dimensions of the pens that it holds. It is nothing too impressive; but good enough to get to grips with the more programmer-oriented nature of openSCAD.

As is, there is 3 stl files included: a top, a bottom, and a strut - that must be printed 4 times. This will give you what you see in the picture, which to be honest is only currently big enough for pencils.

Alternately - assuming you know how to download openSCAD
Modify the file conveniently named Variables.scad
You can change:
the size of the pen/pencil,
the number of pencils - though remember to take four away from the multiplication for the struts,
the height of the gap between the top and the bottom,
and of course, the thickness of the walls.

1) Remember to save changes!
2) Make yourself new stls using each of the top, bottom and joiner SCAD files after the change.

Notes - there is a 1mm gap difference between the strut and the top/bottom. This is because printed outer corners aren't usually straight, (more like rounds?)... you can undo it if you want, but you will be filling down the pieces.

P.S.
As this is only my third day with a 3D printer; any other useful advice will be appreciated. I am especially soliciting advice on how to deal with those pesky rounded corner issues.


3D printing settings

I used 15% infill, but I do not think any is needed:
The top and bottom are naturally solid.
The struts technically only hold the weight of the top part; then pens/pencils should support themselves.
