Cup of Cubes

Having a little fun with a vase design that turned out to be more like a cup. I built this with cubes. The full model is included, but the prints in most photos are vase mode with printing ending at 110 mm. Also see print settings below.

When printing the original in vase mode, I found that the inside of the cup had lots of small ledges that seemed unnecessary. They look pretty, but add to print time and do make the print somewhat more challenging. I changed an aspect of the model design by 1 degree and that shifted the cubes enough to close a small gap that caused the internal ledges. The updated model is labeled "Version 2."

For Version 2, I printed with the same settings as listed below. The last 5 photos compare models: Original on left and Version 2 on right.

Even though the difference on the outside is subtle, I decided to keep both models in this post since some may find the original more appealing. Also, the bulk of the photos are the original version.

Full model is approximately 90 x 90 x 118 mm.

I set "Merge all outlines into a single solid model" and printed in vase mode up to a height of 110 mm.

For vase mode, I used 0.15 mm layer height with 5 solid bottom layers, 1 perimeter and 0% infill.

Be sure to look through all of the photos. The purple ones are Version 2 printed with 3 perimeters at 0.3 mm layer height. Stronger result with approximately the same print time.

The yellow one in the photos is the full model. This was printed with 0.3 mm layer height and 0% infill (after 15% infill for the base). NOTE: This had "Merge to single model" deselected.
