It happens at all levels of mathematics with some students, who tend to think (a+b)^2 = a^2 +b^2. That is psychologically understandable but mathematically mistaken. Perhaps, it would be helpful for them to hold a physical (or visual) model for (a+b)^2 and ponder the meaning of the formula. Of course, there are other ways to explain (a+b)^2 = a^2 +2ab+b^2.

The board alone is enough; the component pieces just add another layer of manipulation.
