3D model description

A new design added to my geared box collection. This cylindrical box has a unique opening and closing mechansim, where ten gear rods are driven to rotate the top lid, which then opens the iris leafs.
The mechanism has a very satisfying feel, because the rods roll over the palm simultaneously, while the lower gear wheel is turned.

Assembly is easy, since the parts snap-fit together, a short assembly guide can be found in the pictures.
The box itself with its 10 gear rods is print in place and needs no assembly.

I recommend to use a little bit of lubrication like silicone oil for the turning parts, to get an extra smooth mechanism

There is also a shorter version of the gear tower included in the download.

3D printing settings

  • i recommend to not go higher than a 0.3mm layer height
  • the parts already have the correct printing orientation, when loaded into the slicer
  • if you are unsure, if your printer gets the tolerances for the print in place mechanism right, i provided two small test prints, which you can try out before printing the complete part
  • also there is a test print to try the snap-fit of the upper gear. You can print "TESTPRINT_MainGear" and try, if the part "Upper_Gear" correctly fits on top
