Born on Rua Verde on March 8, 1495 and died in Granada on March 8, 1550, at age 55, João Cidade dedicated his intense adult life to the care of the poor and sick. Against all the customs of his day, John City created two hospitals where the sick were treated with humanity.
These hospitals are considered, according to current care standards, modern hospitals that were dedicated not only to care but also to treatment. They had a doctor, a pharmacist, nurses and chaplains, the sick were divided by disease, and each was assigned a bed. He was joined by several comrades and thus formed the founding nucleus of the Hospitaller Order, which had its first approval in 1572.
Today the Order is present in 50 countries and St John of God, the man ahead of his time, is the patron saint of hospitals, patients and nurses.
