3D model description

Every day, I pray that God will get on with it and just press that Big Reset Button in the Sky. For all of you who feel the same way, now you can display your feelings for all the world to see.

First, I want to thank @bld for his/her beautiful model of the Earth as well as well as @gabriell for her/his realistic model of a pointing hand. Without these, this would have never come to fruition... not with my modeling skills anyway!

[I tried marking this as a remix and adding the source models to this, but thingiverse (as usual) is fucked and will not allow me to add those models for attribution. The earth model is http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:17336 while the hand model is http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3159424.]

I am providing several variations of this model. The first version - the one that I have printed - involves a little post-processing assembly. It is designed to function as a shadowbox diorama. The two halves of the planet are assembled using the two guide pins for alignment and the reset button glues into the recess on the northern half of the sphere. Then, using 1/4" dowels, both the Hand and the globe are suspended inside of a box, painted to look like space. The rods are hidden from view, giving the appearance that the elements are floating. For the box, if you are going with wood like I did, I recommend something around 75 x 185 x 150mm (3 x 7.25 x 6"). The exact dimensions are far from precise, as you can tell from my wonky metric to imperial conversions.

I am also including two versions of a box you can print if your woodworking skills leave a bit to be desired. This, too, comes with a couple of variations. One is a simple, plain box. If you want to take it up a notch, though, and add a little lighting, you can print the box with the wiring cutouts embedded. The light I am using, for which this box is designed, is one of these USB powered, 3-LED light. At 10 pieces for $10, you will find all kinds of uses for these in your projects. Solder a positive and negative wire to the two longer pads, glue the LED board into the recess at the top and run the wires through the slot, down the hole and out to a 5v power supply.

I wanted a finished look, but I didn't have the $30+ router bit I'd need to make a nice frame out of wood, so I used that router profile in FreeCAD to 3d print my own. Since my print bed can't do it's full 200x200 anymore due to mods (this still wouldn't have fit anyway - it's a tad larger than 200x200), I cut it into four manageable, bite-sized pieces. Print it in pieces and glue it together (I like this cement myself) or print it in one piece if you've got the bed size. This frame not only looks good and adds a touch of class, it also hides the wiring.

Finally, I wanted a nameplate as a finishing touch. My version says "Project Earth - RESET". For best results, I'd recommend turning on Ironing in Cura to smooth out the areas where filament can't be printed in the text. This is intended to be printed in three colors, with the filament swapped at the following layers (assuming 0.2mm layer height with layer count beginning at 0): Layer 0 = silver; Layer 5 = black; Layer 8 = red.

The second version requires no after printing care aside from obviously painting it. The base is a 3mm plate from which the Earth and the Hand of God raises out towards you.

Either model is designed to be easily printed within a 200mm3 build area (with the exception of the box and one-piece frame). Supports are probably only required on the Hand and even that may not be necessary, but I used then anyway. I recommend either 0.1 or 0.2mm layer height (I used 0.2mm); 1.6mm walls (for strength); and 15% triangular infill (save on filament while providing internal support).
