A Masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, David is famed as one of the most popular art pieces ever created. Carved out of marble by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504 the 5.17-metre statue stands in in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. The sculpture depicts a male nude, representing the biblical hero David holding a sling in one hand and a rock in the other.
