The D16 type locomotives arrived in Chile in the mid 50's to replace and displace the steam locomotives on trips to the south. They were manufactured by General Electric with a power of 1600 HP.

Throughout their useful life they were designated to different branches, the services between Alameda to Puerto Montt, Alameda - Cartagena, etc. With the arrival of the electrification of the track from Alameda to Temuco, they were the replacement locomotives to cover the non-electrified section between Temuco and Puerto Montt, including Valdivia.
