This is a helical gear pencil holder. I got the idea from AdditiveTech's Helical Gear Cups on Thingverse. However I didn't want to use bearings. I re-worked this in SolidWorks to make a more aggressive helical gear. Then I created press fit pins and bushings to hold it all together.
The pins are press fit into the bushings and the base. I used a 2 x 4 with a 1" hole drilled in it and a rubber mallet to hammer the pins into the bushings. Then I used a 1/2" dowel and a rubber mallet to hammer the pin and bushing assemblies into the base. This will create a 1mm loose running fit between the bushings and helical gears.
