3D model description
Welcome to Palermo, Sicily!
Porta Nuova, adjacent to the Palazzo dei Normanni, was for centuries the most important access to Palermo by land.
From it depart the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, or Cassaro, the main city artery, and, on the outside, the Corso Calatafimi, the road to Monreale.
The opening of the primitive passage takes place in 1460 called Porta dell'Aquila. The Porta Nuova, perfected on several levels, was commissioned in 1583 by the viceroy Marcantonio Colonna to celebrate the victory over the Turkish armies and commemorate the triumphs of the sovereign.
The building suffered almost total destruction in 1667 due to an explosion, but was entirely rebuilt in the following two years.
