3D model description

I started learning how to use algorithms to design forms that would normally be impossible to conceive. I used Rhino 3D and Grasshopper generative modelling tools to first create a lifelike model of a manta ray, then more algorithms to copy and position each ray to create this beautiful printable lamp. It can be printed in two parts and superglued together. The bulb fitting is incorporated in the design too. Please use a low temp filament bulb or even better an LED bulb.

3D printing settings

Print bed minimum size is 200mm x 200mm x 200mm

Nozzle Dia. - 0.4mm

Nozzle Temp. - I set my print head at 218 degrees Celsius for my particular PLA filament. You will have to find your own perfect temp for your filament brand. Although I find transparent filament require slightly higher temps.

Extrusion Multiplier - 102%
Line Width - 0.42mm
Layer Height - 0.20 - 0.25mm
Initial Layer Height - 0.15mm
Print Speed - Between 45mm/s to 60mm/s
Wall Settings - 2 walls
Top/Bottom Settings - Zero
Infill - Zero
Supports - Zero
Retract - On
Fan - On
Spiral Mode /Vase Mode: Off

Skirt - 5 lines but it’s up to you, as long as the print head is well primed before starting on actual the part. Avoid using a brim because it’s more work to clean up and these parts are more delicate. Unless bed adhesion is a problem...

Skirt Offset: 1mm
Note: If using Cura slicer, set special mode to ‘Surface Mode’.
